When one mentions sport in Barcelona, the first thing that comes to mind is the mighty FC Barcelona. One of the best-known and most successful European sides, the bitter rivalry between Barca and Real Madrid has dominated Spanish Football for almost a century. Barcelona are seen to represent the whole Catalan region of Spain, and like a national team, they are supported with great pride in the city.

They play their home matches at the enormous Camp Nou stadium, and at big matches, the capacity crowds of up to 105,000 create an unrivalled atmosphere. It is possible to buy tickets for all but the most popular matches on the day of the game, and a visit to the stadium to watch Barcelona FC play football is an unforgettable experience.

Aside from football, FC Barcelona's sporting empire covers almost every competitive sport played n Europe, and with the benefit of the Olympic facilities left over from the 1992 summer games, the city is home to a number of successful teams including basketball, gridiron football, handball, hockey and more.

Although bullfighting is not so popular in Catalonia as it is in southern Spain, there are still regular Feria in Barcelona's impressive city centre bullring. Despite the negative press and image that bull fighting has attracted in countries where machismo is underrated, and the grace of the sport is not understood, it has continued to flourish in Spain, and as a part of the culture of the country, it is without equal. An afternoon at the bullring is a memorable experience, and even those who think the sport barbaric will generally come away impressed.
